Mountain Top

Spectacular view across the Magen's Bay side of the island (we got great pics of our villa with the telephoto lens!). The view is free, but to get there you have to walk past some pretty cheesy shops. Sort of like the way Vegas attractions always dump you into a gift shop..... still, if you need t-shirts or rum you can fill those needs here.

Our Canadian travel companion really did her homework finding out about this place. Magens Bay has, according to National Geographic, one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Taking in such a panoramic wonder from 1500 feet above sea level is awe-inspiring and a true treat for the eyes.

MountainTop's balcony is equipped with magnifying viewfinders and a gift/snack area inside. Here, and elsewhere later, I first noticed the strange characteristic of the way the clouds appear so close to the planet's surface - as if I could simply reach out and touch them. There was a very quick burst of rainfall while we were there and then just as quickly it stopped, only to be replaced with bright sunshine once again.

This popular rest stop is at the peak of St. Peter Mountain. We found the offerings quite varied and pleasant, picking up our souvenirs and light refreshments before being taxied back off the mountain. While we didn't even spend a half day here, it was definitely worth our while to investigate this place for the sheer splendor of the view. This unanticipated treat put us all in a great mood and our visit there was so early in our travels...good omen, that MountainTop.

On the top of St Thomas is a place that to get to, you feel like you are traveling in the rainforest: Mountain Top, where they claim to have invented the banana daquiri, made from fresh bananas grown there. The views are astounding, and there are saltwater aquariums teeming with sealife amidst all the specialty shops. Buy local teas, like melon tea or banana tea, jams, like guava, beads, tee-shirts of course, and lots of fun stuff!
