We scheduled our day around the shows, which were on a tight schedule, so make sure you map it out in advance. There is so much to see that you need a full day to see it all to enjoy it. I liked the gorilla and orangutan displays, as well as the Asian elephants and sea lion show.

One of my favorite zoos in the U.S. You can ride the street car from the French District. Set in a beautiful park, and easy to walk. You get to see the beautiful homes in the Garden District on the ride to the zoo. Has a swamp area for native animals of Louisiana.

Audubon Park

Audubon Park is the locals' escape from city life. It's over 300 acres of green grass, live oaks, wildlife, and people having fun.

There's a three-mile path that wraps around the park with designated space for leisure walkers, joggers, bikers, and roller-bladers. It's a favorite place to take the pooch for a stroll. There's also paths for horseback riding (stables are located near the Zoo) and a few ponds teeming with turtles and ducks with benches alongside. Encircled by the path, is a brand new golf course open to the public for a fee.

Have a romantic picnic on the grass. Read a book on one of the many benches or in a gazebo. Let the kids play in the playground. Have a barbecue. No matter what you do, try to take a little time in Audubon Park. It's a gem and a great place to unwind when your wallet (or your hangover) needs a break.

NOTE: While very safe during the day, I would NOT use the park after dark.

This was a nice, clean zoo with a good variety of animals.

It's very easy to get to on the St. Charles trolley. From the trolley, you can choose to walk to the mile and a half to the entrance or ride the shuttle that arrives approximately every 15 minutes.

Audobon Park and Zoo

If you are spending a few days here, please take the time to visit this phenomenal zoo. The Audubon impressed me beyond words. You will even get the chance to see a white tiger and alligator.

It's a relaxing break from upbeat Bourbon Street that will give the entire family some quality time together. Don't forget to bring a backpack to store snacks and water--you'll like having them while visiting the grounds.
