Audobon Park and Zoo

This is probably one of the best zoos in the country. Its beautiful design is full of tropical plants, waterfalls, and lagoons. It houses many rare animals that you can't find in other zoos, as well as a replica of a Louisiana swamp with a rare white gator. There's even a big butterfly exhibit with some of the most beautiful colors I've ever seen. One of the aspects of an attraction like this are all the different areas of the zoo. You have an African area, an Asian area, a Louisian swamp, and much more. I love how they detail each area with sets full of artifacts from those regions of the world. It makes you feel like you're amid other civilizations. This is a truly great experience for anyone. We took a cruise from the French Quarter to get there, so we didn't see much of the park, but it seemed like a really neat park.

Audobon Park and Zoo

To get here, you can take the John James Audubon cruise up to the zoo if you want, instead of driving. The Audubon Zoo houses a reconsruction of a Louisiana swamp, complete with Cajun houseboats, alligators, and trees coming out of the green water. There are several other recreated habitats, such as African savannah and the Mayan Ruins with a Jaguar jungle. White tigers, white alligators, and Komodo dragons are some of the other interesting exhibits here. Have you ever been to a zoo where the featured recipes involve cooking the animals you are viewing? Right next to the tank that holds the catfish in the zoo is a very good recipe for how to cook them up and eat them for dinner. After the zoo, the park nearby is a cool place to hang out and read or eat a picnic lunch.

The Audubon Zoo is an older zoo that is updating its exhibits. They have a komodo dragon as well as a great exhibits of the large cats. Of course they have alligators too! We loved the flamingos who were nesting at the time we visited. If you visit during May or June you may be able to see baby flamingos.

You can take the St. Charles Streetcar to the zoo. It's a nice place to take children and they have a MacDonalds as well as other places to stop for lunch.

The zoo animals are displayed in very lovely settings. They look very natural and all the animals look well cared for. The snake house had many types of snakes in it. There was a "train" to take you around the zoo.

This zoo has some very rare animals, like an albino alligator, a komodo dragon, and orangutans. Its beautiful natural settings allow the animals to live in their own environment. You can tell they really care about the animals.

The zoo has a regional section, featuring animals of the bayou. This is a nice touch. Tips

  1. Bring water! It gets hot in the zoo.
  2. If you are staying in the French Quarter and haven't rented a car, a great deal is to take an Audubon Cruise from the Aquarium of the Americas to the zoo.
  3. Cameras are a great way to take home a free souvenir.
