Over 4,000 acres,this man-made aquatic park is the glory of San Diego,in my opinion,though Balboa Park runs a close second. But this park,created in the late 40's by dredging marshland, epitomizes the city's "sun and fun, yet we care about nature" attitude. Serious ornithologists can explore the nature preserves of endangered species like the Least Tern,while less serious nature enthusiasts can sail,row,or motor a boat,ski in various ways, play ball on the sand,sun-bathe,fly a kite. There's free parking, but,nearby parking goes to the early bird who also can have a choice of fire container and picnic spot. On holidays,like the 4th of July,the park is jam-packed. Weekdays are best to enjoy this watery domain in the summer.No overnight camping is allowed and alcohol is permitted from noon to 8:00 P.M. only. And NO GLASS is allowed. Dogs are excluded during the day,but permitted on leash before 9 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M. Fiesta Island is dog heaven where leashless dogs are allowed at all times,and owners are strongly encouraged to bring their pooper-scoopers and bags. To reach this beauty spot, take I5 to the East Mission Bay Drive exit. You'll have a wonderful, free day in the sun and water that will probably make you fall in love with San Diego! That's what happened to us.And after 19 year in the area, we can still say we don't regret our love affair.
