This market is very local but also safe for tourists.
Near the Coyoacan main square you will find this market. It has nothing that can't be found in other markets in Mexico City, so you won´t miss anything you were looking for, but in a very safe environment and within reach of lots of cultural surprises.
In the Mexican markets you will find a blend of food and goods, all kinds of them, from watches to shirts to plastic toys to electronics. The nice part of Coyoacan market is that there are more stands that sell souvenirs for tourists, but at a very good price, nothing like the prices you get at expensive tourist traps.

Besides having fruits and vegetables, the markets in Mexico holds areas for little restaurants which tend to be very economical and have great flavor, in Spanish we say that the cook has "Buen sazón" referring to the experience of seasoning the food by a cook which is completely different even if the ingredients and recipes are the same, you have to have that special touch when cooking, it's an art.
You can expect to have really fresh food as the cooks buy locally at the market and if they run out of any ingredient they will sure send somebody running to get it pronto.
When choosing a place to eat at a local market don´t go for the good looking waitresses or cooks, choose the old ladies who have the experience engraved in their heads and on their wrinkles. I always use this method and have been gifted with wonderful meals. Sometimes the stand is very modest but you can´t match the "sazón" with any of those artificial-expensive places.
In Coyoacan's market is easy to order food even if you don´t speak much Spanish, some of the restaurants/stands have a big display with pictures of the specialties, their name and price, so just point and shoot!
Buen Provecho.

This market is very local but also is safe and the vendors are used to dealing with tourists.

Do you want to experience a real Mexican taco or the whole Enchilada? Take a bite here, you can choose between all the little food stands, they are clean and you will enjoy the company of real people, not the snobby crowd in a high end restaurant. They have everything from seafood to just snacks and even hamburgers, but don´t be fooled, the taste of those hamburgers is going to be truly different, as having a taco in a NYC sidewalk would be.
As this is a medium class neighborhood you will not find the usual drunk guy roaming around or the trash overfilling the containers, fortunately the owners of the stands have understood that if they want more customers, their market should have a good ambience, something not happening in poorer areas.
