My Favorite Zoo

My Favorite Zoo

My husband and I took our little boy to the Memphis Zoo for his first birthday. We all had a wonderful time. Parking is plentiful but there is a $3 fee. There are several statutes of animals outside the entrance and as we approached, the zoo staff was outfitting them in costumes for the annual Zoo Boo. Admission prices were reasonable at $13 per adult and free for children under 2. I believe the prices will be increasing in 2010 to $15 per adult but in my opinion it is still well worth the money. We started our adventure in Cat Country with the tigers and lions and such. The animals all seem very content. We then headed on over to the farm area. My son loved this part of the zoo. He got to pet a horse and a sheep. He also got to get face to face with some ducks. There is a small train that runs around the farm but we didn't ride it. We then went to see the monkeys. They were so much fun to watch, playing and swinging on ropes and bars. Then we went to the China Exhibit and saw the panda bears which always seem to be sleeping everytime we visit. The polar bears were also a lot of fun to watch as there is a viewing area where you can see them underwater. The new exhibit "Teton Trek" had just opened and is a replica of Yellowstone and has grizzly bears, wolves, etc. It has an amazing log "cabin" where you can rock on the porch and watch the animals or lounge by a fireplace. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the zoo and can't wait to go back.

We went in May, on a Sunday, when it wasn't busy at all. The park is very clean and nonsmoking throughout. There's a restaurant with Backyard Burger in the front of the park and plenty of snack shops positioned at each of the exhibits. The park is uniquely decorated appropriately for each exhibit, and you can see the time and effort put into the design. The Asian-themed area is decorated like you're entering a fortress and imitates an Asian country. I recommend the train ride through the park. Though the park isn't overly large like some other state zoos, the train ride is a cheap ride around to observe all the exhibits.

Absolutely fantastic, a must visit.

My favourite were the monkeys, as you could eat and watch them out the window.

Lovely and clean, loads of amenities, would most definitely go back again on our next visit to Memphis.

The Memphis zoo is really one of the top zoos in the nation. It may not be as big as some of the others, but it is extremely well-maintained. The first thing you will notice when arriving is the huge main entrance, which resembles an ancient Egyptian monument (since Memphis is named after a city in Egypt). There are plenty of safe and secure parking areas, and it is handicapped-accessible.

Once inside, you will find that the Egyptian theme is continued. There is a river going down the main walkway that resembles a scale model of the Nile. There is an abundance of plants and large trees, so there should be more than enough shade even for the hottest of days.

The animal exhibits themselves are fantastic. Most are accurate recreations of that particular animal’s real environment. The exhibits are also quite large, and the animals all seem very active, so viewing them is quite easy. The zoo is set up in different zones, and each one has its own decorations or theme. There is a wide variety of animals and fish to view here and many different areas to sit and rest. There is also a playground and train for the kids to ride on.

The premier exhibit at the Memphis zoo is the new "China" exhibit. The Memphis zoo is one of the few zoos in the country to have the giant pandas on display. This exhibit is amazing and only 2 years old. They have done an entire section of the zoo up to look like a Chinese village and have a variety of animals from S.E. Asia there, in addition to the pandas. There is also a carousel there with animals from Chinese folklore for kids to ride. They also show you a 15-minute movie before entering the exhibit to show the two pandas' trip from China to Memphis. There is a small additional fee to see the China exhibit, but it is really worth it, as it is one of the best parts of the zoo.

It’s a great time for everyone, especially families. Be warned, though, on 70- to 80-degree weekends, that this place is packed. During the week, it's not bad at all, or if it's 80+ degrees, people don’t come in droves. You can find the zoo's website here.

The Memphis Zoo

A zoo is a zoo is a zoo, I think, but Memphis Zoo has THE PANDAS!!! The panda exhibit was a lot of fun - we spent a lot of time just watching the pandas eat bamboo. You pay extra for this exhibit, but it's worth the extra $3 per person.
