Description
Each year the southern coastal town of Juana Diaz holds its Mavi Carnival. It is a traditional folklore celebration in honor of the drink, mavi (mah-vee). Made from the bark of the ironwood tree (scientific name Colubrina reclinata), mavi is also known as sassafras. The festivities are suitable for all ages and there are both daytime and evening activities. Floats, parades, arts and crafts, live music, traditional food and mavi drinking, in addition to the crowning of a carnival queen, are highlights of the celebration.
