After driving through the South Rim entrance (via Northbound 64)and veering left toward Grand Canyon Village you will see Mather Point (just look for the parking lot filled with tour buses on your right). This is the first available vista point as you enter the park and it is a must see for first time visitors (don't worry about embarrassing yourself with outbursts of emotion--everyone else will be doing it too). Nothing can prepare you for this breathtaking view. Everyone has an idea of what the Grand Canyon looks like but it is at this moment that you realize the magnitude of such a vast expanse and the futility of trying to catch it on film. I put my camera away thinking how stupid it would be to try and photograph this natural wonder and how cheated those have been who have only seen the Grand Canyon in pictures.
