Manneken Pis

Just a few blocks behind the Town Hall, on the corner of rue de l'Etruve and rue du ChĂȘne stands the Manneken Pis , the statue of the little boy weeing.

No one really knows how this statue became so popular, though many legends exist. But it is sincerely believed that it was created to be nothing more than a fountain topper. Costumes (i.e. Santa Claus, Elvis Presley, kimonos, etc.) have been created for the boy.

If you NEED to see this little boy urinating, by all means, do so. However, I was surprised by how small the statue really was. We fell upon the tiny sqaure where the fountain is located during the pouring rain while kids and tourists were hovering under awnings. Once the rain stopped, the statue was swarmed by people.

You may have heard of it: it's a fountain-statue of a little boy peeing. The legend (one of many) has it, that's how he helped extinguish a city fire. No comment there.

Among the world's fountains, Mannekin-Pis probably has the largest wardrobe (over 600 different costumes the city makes him wear on various occasions). I confess, I only saw him once, and he was naked.

Tacky, yes, but free to visit anytime, day or night, centrally located, and makes for great souvenirs: if your friends' homes are anything like mine, they'll rejoice at the idea of getting a Mannekin-Pis corkscrew--a miniature version of the statue, with the corkscrew sticking out right in the middle, in the place of... well... you figure it out. Almost as good a gift as a box of fine Belgian chocolates! Nah, who am I kidding...
