It's quite a large zoo. We went on a rainy day, so the outdoor animals weren't very outgoing. Just plan to go on a sunny day and you and your family will have a great time!

Lovely and FREE. Pack a lunch, watch the sea lions, and sit on one of the many grassy areas. It's a great low-key date spot (and somehow, watching monkeys is kind of romantic).

I love watching the monkeys and apes interacting. I can stand there for hours. Lincoln Park Zoo is nice because it is very accessible. There are a lot of unique animals to see. If you get to go to the zoo in the colder months, most animals are more active than if you go when it is to hot out. I recommend this zoo.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Chicago has two zoos. The big one, Brookfield Zoo, is in the suburbs and the urban Lincoln Park Zoo is located in one of Chicago's green lung and affluent neighborhood: Lincoln Park. The best part: it's free!

Created in 1868, it's one of the oldest in the country and is undergoing a lot of changes. After building a more adequate habitat for African animals, it is rebuilding its Ape center and, according to one of the zookeeper I met, they will have new guests. It will open this July. Amongst the sights to see: the new Regenstein African journey, the Primate house, the bird house and my personal favourite, the Lion House, hosting big cats such as lion, rare Siberian Tigers, an even rarer Afghanistan leopard, etc.

It’s a great family excursion.

Imagine it - a free zoo. Chicago has one, the Lincoln Park Zoo. Anyone can enter, and I love that democratic fact. There are several entrances, and I could see myself visiting frequently here if I were a resident, just to check in on how the elephants were doing. Some parts of the zoo are showing their age. While many zoos around the country pride themselves on realistic exhibits, some of the environments here are less than ideal for the animals. On the other hand, other parts of the zoo are being revamped. I was incredibly impressed with the Africa exhibit, and I have no doubt that the new primate exhibition will be an example of great zoomanship. It was closed for renovation at the time of our visit. The hall of the felines was less than ideal, and of course, most big cats sleep during the day. However, this is where we found the biggest crowds.

The zoo has a great variety of animals from all parts of the world. There are donation tins around the zoo, and I think it's an excellent idea to give money. The fact that they have done so much without charging admission really impresses me. As a zoo connoisseur, I will say I did enjoy my afternoon at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

For those of you with practical concerns, I will assure that there were public restrooms. In addition, there is a large and varied food court area, as well as many souvenir and food stands in the park.
