Liberation Day

Description

Commemorating Guam's liberation from foreign occupation in 1944, this event is the island's most celebrated holiday, the day stretching into a week of revelry. But, festivities center around a parade that runs down Marine Drive downtown. Floats built by the villages, bands and costumed marchers fill the road for about five hours while crowds eat barbecue and whoop it up. If no one offers a free sample, purchase food and drink from parade-route stands. The Liberation Day Queen is crowned. Evening music and fireworks round out the day's festivities.
