In the general area of the Colonial Zone (Zona Colonial) sits a large open expanse of land at the center of which is an imposing structure dating back to the city's 16th century beginnings. This is the Torre del Homenaje (Tower of Homage). One way to arrive here while in the Colonial Zone is to make your way across the Plaza España to its southern end, then enter past the Fortaleza Ozama to reach the Torre de Homenaje. This tall stone fortress of impressive proportions was once a prison, but nowadays you are free to climb its turret for more spectacular vistas of the city. The structure also has the distinction of being the oldest military tower in the New World. In the foreground of the property as you enter from the street is a large modernistic statue of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo. There is a very small fee for entry.
