The Kyoto Municipal Zoo is an extremely poor example of how to care for animals and how to educate children and adults about animals and their needs.
I was appalled by and distressed to see the conditions in which large animals, such as an elephant, bears and hippopotamus are kept, and saddened by the enclosures for some of the smaller creatures also, such as a wallaby and a large number of monkeys. In general, enclosures were small and constructed of concrete and metal. For the larger animals, they often contained no vegetation for privacy or shade.
