Key West Aquarium

One of the oldest aquariums in the nation, and rebuilt in the 1930s, the Key West Aquarium is a fun experience for the entire family. Began as an open-air aquarium, many of the original structures and design is still intact, although the entire exhibit has been added onto over the years. The overall design is very unique with indoor petting ponds, to outdoor holding tanks that back up to the ocean/gulf. There are many regional fish, such as reef sharks, Jewfish, yellow-tail snapper, iguanas, local birds, and sea turtles, as well as more exotic varieties of animals such as eels and sea horses.

There are exhibits to interact with the wildlife, such as feeding shows for the barracuda, sharks, and turtles; petting areas for sting rays; and various electronic and printed media throughout the complex with fun-facts about the animals. The aquarium is focused on education about saving sea turtles and the prevention and recovery of injuries of these beautiful creatures.

Admission is around $10 per adult ($5 per child) and is open daily from 10am to 6pm. It's a great stop while downtown Key West to learn more about the local sealife and help support preservation of endangered animals.

Small aquarium, but a good deal. There is a touch tank near the entrance and a side exhibit that holds tarpon and other fish. The tanks outside in the rear of the building hold the sharks. On clear days you can see quite a bit, if they are feeding when the keepers toss in bait it is an added bonus, otherwise you just watch them swim. Lots of variety for a small aquarium.

This was a great and affordable experience. You can actually enter/re-enter as much as you want for the day, so you can come back for the feeding times if that's what you are into!

Just imagine touching a real shark! That's the kind of excitement you can have at this very cool aquarium. You can tour the many window displays of the various fish and sealife from the Keys and South Florida. Then on the guided tour you will learn about these incredible animals, watch the sharks feed, and even touch a small nurse shark! We got video of our 3-year-old touching the fin of this amazing animal! This is a fun activity to take your children to that isn't going to empty your wallet. It's a little dark and wet, but it enhances the atmosphere! Good time for families :)
