Ke'e Beach

This is the Bali Hai beach, the absolute end of the road. Perfect picturesque palm trees, lagoon, surf--it has it all. It’s the best in the morning--leave your condo early because it will take you a while to get there. Head north on the highway and keep going around the island counter-clockwise until you get to the end of the road. Go slowly when crossing Limahuli Stream, which runs across the road in a shallow depression, as sometimes there's a large pothole lurking under the water. Don't be terribly concerned if the parking lot is packed-it doesn't necessarily mean the beach is likewise packed. The Kalalau trail takes off from here, and a lot of the cars are from the backpackers.

The beach itself *can* get crowded in late morning and early afternoon, so get there early and enjoy the morning, and then head out to a more deserted beach later on. Snorkeling in the lagoon is pretty good around the edges, but be mindful of the outlet and of the surf--it can get pretty big on the north side in the winter months. There is a lovely sandy bottom to the lagoon, so it is great for just lazing around. All in all, it is a terrific beach, but can be crowded.

Ke'e Beach

Ke'e Beach is my all time favorite beach on the island of Kauai. You have the Napili coast to your left and all the chickens and roosters you could want! This is a very calm beach due to the waves breaking on the reef, so it is a perfect location for small children.

The snorkeling here is always good along the reef, the water is not too deep, 10 feet or so. Now to see the turtles you will need to be adventerous and swim over the rocks or walk. At the right time during high tide you can swim over the rocks, you will not have much room between your body and the rocks, so having gloves on so as not to touch anything and to have a piece of mind.

Once you get over the rocks the scenerary is gorgeous! It takes your breath away! Turtles come up out of nowhere and swim next to you! My only warning is that you are now in their house so don't chase them, try and touch them or feed them! Watch in awe from a distance. We had turtles from every size and they are so graceful gliding through the water.

If you think you have seen it all, you still have not visited Hawaii! It was a wonderful way to enjoy the day at sea. There are a lot of rental facilities and they are all certified and very reliable.

Ke'e Beach is what you think of Hawaii! It's very lush and tropical. This is a perfect beach for kids, since the water is very calm. Also, this is a great spot to snorkel - there is a coral reef that borders the entire beach and you can see amazing fish! If you go over the reef to the deeper water, sea turtles are abundant! Water goes from a few feet to very deep, so be careful! Also be careful of the surf - it can get rough with the water coming over the reef. This beach is at the end of the road past Hanalei; you have the start of the Na Pali coast and great hiking trails. Get here early, because there are not a lot of parking spaces. One great thing is all the wild roosters and hens running around!

This was my first time snorkeling in Hawaii and it was amazing. I could have spent every day there. As I sat there I just couldn't believe it. It was a dream come true. The fish were so vibrant and the beach wasn't crowded at all. What an incredible experience!
