About 100m from this lively and colourful market is the lonesome figure of Havis Amanda. A symbol that embodies Helsinki’s status as the "Daughter of the Baltic", this fountain is largely left there, freezing for 364 days of the year. On May Day (Vappu), it is a tradition amongst Finnish students to congregate here, bathe her, and dress her with their graduating caps. One can only imagine the amount of UFO (unidentified floating objects) at this fountain, as Finns are well known for getting really "happy and high" on their graduation day.
To get here, walk along Esplanadi Boulevard toward the harbour.

An advantage in the timing of our trip, however, is that, in July, we were able to buy fresh and frozen and filleted and saltwater fish in the evening hours (it’s only available from May till August). And my children had restless eyes. The wide smiles on their faces became even wider when we came to the harlequin rows with great smells.
