Prepare to get soaked to the skin, and hypothermic. You should be told to purchase a wet suit in advance, but you won't even be told to bring a towel. The volume of buckets they retain on the lower deck should give you an indication of what's to follow; high seas and four hours of nausea, followed by a "delicious buffet" that is eaten by two or three people with cast-iron stomachs. Definitely do not take small children on this tour!

Sailing Napali

Sailing Napali

We wanted to sail along the famed Napali Coast from the North Shore since we were staying at Princeville hotel, but since the only two companies that sail from the north were fully booked, we decided on the sail/snorkel tour by Kauai Sea Tours. If staying in the north, book your Napali sail early, as driving all the way south just to sail back north seemed like a waste of time. That being said, our tour was run by very friendly and informative staff. The captain pointed out monk seals and turtles, and even turned the boat around to follow spinner dolphins.

We had to get up early to be at the docks before 7am. We took Bonine the night before and again that morning. Unfortunately, that was not enough for me. Once the boat stopped to see dolphins, it rocked and I got sick. Waves were rough on the way out, as admitted by our captain. I could not break out of it. My son took some Dramamine on top of the Bonine that another passenger had and was able to bring himself out of it. I don't think it helps that they have breakfast onboard.

My son was the only taker for the intro scuba dive. He trained as the boat toured, so he was ready to go in once we stopped to snorkel. He spotted a 5-foot reef shark on his dive. Scuba is now something he wants to look into more when he goes to school in Rhode Island next year.

I regret not getting my sea legs, but the staff was wonderful. A monk seal was spotted resting on a beach that we passed. I had to give my husband control of the camera since I could not get around. They say it is all in your head, but I don't agree. If you are prone to motion sickness, this is a long ride before they stop to snorkel.
