Karekare Beach

The beach is just so beautiful. The sand is black and waves tumble in with a roar. It stretches as far as the eye can see in one direction and enclosed by cliffs on the other side. There are also lovely sand dunes covered in tussocks further inland. The beach was used in the film The Piano where Aida first landed. I didn't swim as it was the middle of winter - and the sea is very dangerous. The waves are strong and there are frequent rips and a strong under current. In the summer months other west coast beaches have lifeguard out and you can swim safely between flags they put out. I've been saved by them in the past - so don't go out past your waist with no life guards! In the winter the beach is wonderful to walk along.
