Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a zoo, a natural history museum, and a botanical garden all in one. The majority of the museum is made up of outdoor exhibits. You can see all the native desert animals.

Just be careful what time of year you visit. It can be very hot in the summer, which makes it uncomfortable to trek outdoors. Also, the animals sleep during the hot part of the day.

The museum is open every day of the year. The hours of operation vary depending on the season.
June - August
7:30 am - 10:00 pm
March - September
7:30 am - 5:00 pm
October - February
8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Also, the road leading to the museum runs through the desert and mountains. It's a steep and narrow road with great views.

The cost to enter the museum is really reasonable.
Prices are also tied to the season.
May - October
$9 Adults
$2 Kids 6-12
November - April
$12 Adults
$4 Kids 6-12
Children 5 and under are always free.

A couple of suggestions, bring a hat, sunscreen and water. There is a gift shop and small cafe, but the water is overpriced. The desert trail has water fountains and ramadas to cool in. Also, the reptile house, the butterfly exhibit, the aviary and the small art museums are great places to stop and get out of the sun for a bit.

One last thing, keep an eye out for the docents. They're able to share loads of great info and sometimes they'll bring out animals to view up close and personal.

This fascinating nature park is more than 8.5 acres big and hosts a botanical garden, a zoo, and a museum.

In the museum, you can find exhibits about the geology, history, and fauna of the Sonoran.

In the park, you can wander over a 3km-long hiking path through a unique habitat with more than 1,200 sorts of plants. Wildlife, like colibrie, desert cats, wild pigs, and Mexican wolves, can be spotted year-round.

A visit takes a minimum of about 2 hours.

Be sure to also visit the nearby Old Tucson film studios, where movies like Rio Bravo, Three Amigo, Wild Wild West, and Tombstone were made.

This is a great destination for everyone - and a good place to learn about everything desert. Many desert animals make this more of a zoo than a museum - but the plants make it much more than a zoo. A large cactus garden, bird aviary, and wildlife area make it a very interesting destination for all.

The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum consists of self-guided trails that demonstrate the wild desert animals and plants commonly found in the Arizona area, such as a cactus garden that displayed many varieties of cacti and birds, like owls. It takes about 3 hours to see the whole museum. The majority of the walking is done outside, so bring plenty of water and try to get there in the morning.

The museum was very interesting and informative. They also had hands-on exhibits for the kids to touch and play with, like an archaeology site where they donned goggles and shovels in search of undiscovered treasures. A favorite for us was seeing the animals. They had various big cats, like bobcats and ocelots; sheep; otters; beavers; and prairie dogs, which were adorable and very entertaining.

We had visited the Phoenix Zoo earlier in the week, but the Sonora Desert Museum was by far much better, as the animals were out and walking through the desert-like conditions that made the experience realistic.

I love the Sonora Desert Museum. We have gone many times and each time I am more and more amazed at the beauty and variety of desert life that the museum showcases. The hummingbird exhibit is amazing. You enter this large netted area and just have a seat on one of the benches among the flowers, trees, feeders, and bushes. Then almost out of nowhere the birds appear and fit and flutter all around the feeders and flowers.

The prairie dog exhibit is one of the more entertaining exhibits at the museum. The exhibit is set up so you can watch the prairie dogs both above and below ground. Besides being educational, the prairie dogs are just adorable. There are lots of other wildlife exhibits along with exhibits that showcase the local vegetation of the desert.
