Works of Art

My trip began on a warm California day on a motorcycle ride w/ my boyfriend on the 405 (which is free). He had never been to my favorite place on earth, The J. Paul Getty Museum. So what kind of girlfriend would I be, if I never took him to the The Getty.

He was instantly amazed by the massive structure and natural beauty of his surroundings...and that was just the tram ride! He was amazed at how beautiful the ride was, seeing homes on the hill and the ocean on a clear day.

His first impression were astoundment. He was greeted by volunteers/docents when stepping on/off the tram and upon arriving to the main entrance to the The Getty. He was immediately overwhelmed by what a magnificant waterfountain flowed down the center of the main stairs.

As he walked those stairs, I could tell he was "impressed". He isn't by any means "artsy". So for him to WANT to see & explore was all the satisfaction i needed.

we first went to the Introduction tour of how Mr. J. Paul Getty founded the museum and where tour are located and what to expect while on your tour of this amazing museum.

Then we proceeded to the Gardens. Where I saw the most brilliant display of colors from the lush landscape (floating in a huge pond) in a circluar pattern. And had to take pictures of the flowing brook that was covered by wildflowers (that smelled so sweet).

I have to admitt, he was pleasantly surprised to find out they served "Corona's" at They Getty. We have pictures to commorate this special occasion. lol.

We saw the exhibit of photos from what looked to be nude artistry from the 1940-1960's era. My boyfriend kept saying, "anyone can take these photo's. What's so special?". I had to explain that art, like most things in life, is left up to each individuals "eye" and imagination of what that piece means to them at that time. Light, feelings, thoughts all go into what makes a photo, picture, sculture or painting. I think he understood, cause he smiled at a photo right before leaving the exhibit...

Finally our day concluded with my favorite artist, Mr. Vincent Van Gogh. It still amazes me, that no matter how many times I've seen his work, I still want to smile and stay there for hours stareing. Although, Starry Night is my favorite (in NY), "Irises" is my second. I didnt know previous times going that you could take a picture of it (no flash though), so I was THRILLED to have my first picture of "Irses" in my scrapbook of my trip to The J.Paul Getty with my love.

Im truely happy to share this experience. And although, there was more I could have written, I hope you go to the wonderful museum with someone special and have as great of day as I did.

WOW! If this place had no art in it, it would still be a great place to visit!

The building is on a hill near Beverly Hills. You park near the freeway, then take a tram or walk one mile up the hill to the museum grounds. Once there, you will be rewarded with 360° views of LA and Southern California and can see as far as the smog will let you.

The building and grounds are fantastic. There are many places just to sit and enjoy the view (fountains, gardens, walks, balconies, etc.).

The collection is good, with all major periods of Europe represented.

We were here for two hours and could have spent a lot more time just hanging out.

Definitely worth a half day or more if you are in the LA area.

This is one of the most amazing museums I have ever been too. First of all, it is kind of like up in the hills/mountain overlooking the city so you can take this little tram and you get a really amazing view of Los Angeles (although it would be more amazing if you didn't have the 405 at your feet sort of marring your view as you look at all the traffic). The museum itself is beautifully designed - the architecture is amazing and there is tons of glass and modern and unique and amazing features of the museum. You really feel like it is awe-inspiring when you first see it and you feel like you are stepping inside an architectural masterpiece.

Once you come inside you will not be disappointed in the selection of art that is available. There is a very wide selection of modern arts - you can enjoy Pollaks, Picassos, Warhols, everyone and everything you can imagine. You can also see more traditional art - there are many different wings of the museum and there is something to please every different art lover. There are also some fabulous sculptures and other things so everyone should be able to find something they find beautiful.

There is parking here and it doesn't cost a great deal. Admission is not expensive, especially for children under 12. In addition, on some Tuesdays admission to the museum is free to encourage people to come and check it out so if you are able to plan your trip for a Tuesday I recommend you check the Getty website to see if that particular day is a free day. I think it is the first Tuesday of every month but I could be wrong. Either way it is definitely worth the admission price - you could spend a whole afternoon there and not get bored or run out of things to look at. You can also have lunch at the cafe - it is really good food for a museum and they have a nice selection, especially rich on appetizers type foods and salads - I recommend the chicken Caesar or the bruschetta.

Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the Getty for the afternoon. Just beware of the potential for traffic, as the 405 is one of the more populated freeways of Los Angeles so if you go on a busy day it might take you a long time to get there. I rate this as one of my all time favorite museums in the United States and I am sure you will not be disappointed. They also have special traveling exhibits which give you an opportunity to experience even more art than they already have in the permanent collection.

This place was great! It is built on top of a hill/mountain. To get there you park and take a tram thing to the top. It's fun! I love their art collection. I saw so many fantastic and exciting things. The building itself was amazingly beautiful. Their exhibits are always new and exciting. It has an outdoor feel which is great! The view from the building was incredible. All-around this place was excellent! There is a food place which has good tasting food.

This is located in an idyllic setting atop a hill with great views of the city. The highlight of the trip for me was getting to see Van Gogh's painting titled Irises, a must for any fan of Impressionist paintings. You can learn a bit about the center from the frequent free tours that give you insight into its well-known architecture and design. I don't have green fingers, but the gardens impressed me.
