Description
This church was constructed by the Jesuits between 1605 and 1765, in the heart of Quito's historical center. Its elaborate baroque facade was sculpted in stone by indigenous hands.
This temple was closed from 1767 to 1807 due to the banishment of Jesuits from Ecuador. It was re-opened by the Chilean friar Camilo Henríquez, from the Order of Buenamuerte, who later participated in the independence struggles of his native land.
Thousands of people visit the church every day, due to its central location, and its attractive architecture makes it popular with tourists.
