Audubon Aquarium of the Americas

The Aquarium of Americas is one of the top-ranked aquariums in the country. The Audubon also runs a zoo, so you have the opportunity to buy a ticket that includes the aquarium, zoo, transportation, and IMAX Theater.

The IMAX Theater has several shows running at any given time. Some of the films are even 3-D.

The aquarium is made up of several exhibits, including the rain forest ones, a temporary frog exhibit, and the shark one. The aquarium is very well kept and definitely worth a stop.

I thoroughly enjoyed this aquarium as much as I enjoyed the zoo. This aquarium had sea life from all over the world divided into separate exhibits.

There was a beautiful glass tunnel that surrounded you with species of the Caribbean.

The jellyfish exhibit was amazing. There were some of the biggest jellyfish I've ever seen.

A tropical rainforest with piranhas and wild plant life was a lot fun. It's the closest I think you'll ever get to a piranha, unless of course you'd be silly enough to go swimming in a rainforest somewhere.

There's a fun penguin exhibit that I think is great for the kids.

The Gulf of Mexico exhibit has some big and rare sharks. From what I remember, it housed a hammerhead shark at the time, which is very rare to see in an aquarium.

I've heard that they are opening a big insect exhibit. It may already be opened by now, but it sounds like it'll be fun.

There is also an IMAX theater that we didn't get to go to, but any IMAX is always a fun learning experience.

This place is great for one of those rainy New Orleans days. The most visually impressive sight is the "panoramic tunnel of ocean" that you can walk through as you see all manner of wildlife swimming over and beside you. There are several rotating exhibits, as well as a glass-top Amazon rain forest replica. They are open from 9:30am to 6pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 9:30am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday. Admission prices for the aquarium only are $15 for adults, $8 for children, and $11 for seniors; the aquarium plus the IMAX theatre is $19 for adults, $12 for children, and $16 for seniors; and the aquarium plus the zoo is $20 for adults, $11 for children, and $15 for seniors.

Not only is the aquarium is a great indoor attraction when you need to get out of the heat or away from the hustle of downtown New Orleans, it is a destination in and of itself. Inside is quiet and soothing with a number of ecosystems represented. From the Amazon to the Louisiana River Delta, there are amazing creatures to be discovered at every turn. We have been here before with our children who are enthralled by each and every display, but we came alone this time. I can easily say that we enjoyed it every bit as much on our own. Having been to many aquariums in the US, I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best and should not be missed.

I seemed to enjoy it as much or more than the children did. It was very informative and I enjoyed seeing all the different species that are native to the region.
