Horyu-ji Temple

Description

The entrance to this famous temple is through the 15th century Nadai Mon gate. The Chumon gate, the main hall and the pagoda collectively are believed to be the world's oldest wooden structures, dating to the 7th century. It is believed that the first structure was built in 607 by Prince Shotoku. There are several well-known national treasures in both the To-in (east side) and the Sai-in (west side). Typical of the Asuka-style architecture is the Golden Hall (Kondo) on the west side. Horyu-ji is a visually inspiring example of the legacy of Buddhism's early foothold in Japan.
