You've Got to Do It...

In every trip there are certain things that you are obliged to do. Even if you've managed to make it all the way to Hollywood California with out having any interest whatsoever in films or star-gazing - it is still all but compulsory that you visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

If you arrive on Hollywood Blvd by car or - well, I guess it will probably be by car as there are very few ways to get around LA that aren't by car. (You could walk if you're not coming from too far away, but buses aren't recommended by those who live there.) Then you will all but stumble upon the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

With all the glitz and glamour that surrounds it; you might think that it's set aside from the largely trafficked area of Hollywood. But you would be wrong. If you start walking down Hollywood Blvd towards the main shopping district, before long you will simply become aware that there are star-shaped steps along the sidewalk beneath your feet. And with a start you realize, you've been walking the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

It's somewhat different than I pictured it, but there's something kind of cool (if very surreal) about this incredibly well known 'attraction' of Hollywood passing by unnoticed under the feet of those who work and live in the area every day.

The locals say that this area has been cleaned up a lot in recent years - though I do have to say the whole thing still seemed a lot more dingy and dated than I would have imagined. Even at Christmas when there were live brass bands playing along the walk and the flashy new shopping centre and theater (where you find the Kodak Theater - home of the Academy Awards) was decked out for the holidays in a very beautiful way, I was still surprised at how down trodden much of it seemed.

Not that it is lacking in character - and even though it's not the glitzy thing I pictured, is still a very unique and interesting thing to see on your visit to Hollywood. It can be difficult to photograph the stars, as so many people are walking past them - and do be aware that all the dressed up characters that are along the walk (some of them spectacularly dressed, and others quite sad and tatty) are trying to make money by having you take your photo with them. If you want your photo taken with Spiderman or Jack Sparrow - then you will have no trouble managing this here. But they can also be a bit pushy at times.

This is also an excellent place to get the great cheesy Hollywood souvenirs. Shop after shop on Hollywood Blvd sell everything from Elvis salt shakers to John Wayne coffee mugs. And of course - any number of things with Hollywood stars or California licence plates on it.

If you're looking for slightly more upmarket things from Hollywood - then go across the street to the Hollywood and Highland Center. The newly developed center has over 60 shops, restaurants, cafes and even nightclubs and hotels. It's very well situated, nicely laid out and at Christmas is particularly nice to have a festive coffee and enjoy the California sun.

Go up to the top floor for an excellent view of Hollywood Blvd and LA city in the distance.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

When you think of Hollywood you often think of the Hollywood letters in the hills, the cement hand and footprints of celebrities in front of Grauman's Theater, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame featuring dozens of stars commemorating famous entertainers. Luckily, all of these exciting landmarks are in the same place!

Park your car in one of the parking garages in the Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St. The cement footprints are directly in front of Grauman's Theater. Also, right in front of the theater is where you can sign up to take one of those bus tours around Hollywood. Not far away is a shopping center which has a few shops and eateries. It also has a great elevated balcony which, when standing on it, gives you a great opportunity to take pictures of the HOLLYWOOD letters in the hills. Also, attached to the center is the Kodak Theater, the place where the Oscars are held every year. Signs listing all of the Oscar winners for Best Picture even hang from the ceiling.

The only thing that involves a little walking, as the name suggests, is the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Prior to visiting it I didn't realize how many stars there were and how much space they spanned. With more than 2,000 stars, they line both sides of the Boulevard and go down for quite awhile. It's quite fun taking the walk and spotting different stars. However, if you really want to find a specific star I highly recommend you research its exact location in advance. Lots of websites, list the exact addresses of many of the stars. There are often people dressed as celebrities lining the walk. While I was there I got to take pictures with Mickey Mouse, Spider Man, and Marilyn Monroe.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lining the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard are the names of all the famous stars of years past and present. You can find all your favorite stars' names there, whether they are actors, musicians, directors, or anything to do with show business. A personal favorite was seeing John Lennon's star in front of Capitol Records. Another favorite, Regis Philbin, was right in front of the Jimmy Kimmel Theatre. Be sure your camera has lots of room for photos! Overlooking Hollywood Blvd is the famous Hollywood sign. A very cool sight! Also lining Hollywood Boulevard are some unique shops and souvenir stores that you should check out. I noticed it is a great area to shop for shoes! There were a lot of stores featuring some very unusual but fashionable styles. Definitely a different experience for a Midwestern gal like me!

As I walked along from Capitol Records to the West, I came upon the Kodak Theatre and Grauman's Chinese Theatre, which are right next to each other. There were a lot of people gathered in the area taking photos with people dresses up as different characters such as Michael Jackson, Batman, Elvis, and many others. It was a fun place to be! Also a small side note about the traffic - The traffic is very slow-moving through all of L.A. so be sure and allow plenty of time for travel.

Are you one of those people that love to read celebrity magazines and keep up with all the stars of Hollywood? Well then the Hollywood walk of fame would be a wonderful place for you to visit.

You can stroll along the walk and check out all the different footprints of your favorite stars. They have stars dating back to the 50s as well as stars from the present day Hollywood. Also check out you favorite stars! This inexpensive place is fun and always enjoyable to take a walk along!

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Ever wish you could have a star on Hollywood Boulevard? All you need is $15,000 and a sponsor to nominate you for one. No biggie, right? Then there’s the small issue of your accomplishments in the industry and to the community.

Getting a star isn’t all that easy. The Walk of Fame Committee meets annually and receives over 100 nominations a year. The sponsor must fill out a nomination form and include bodies of the artists work, like CD’s, DVD’s, etc., plus a biography and any community and/or civic-oriented activities. If the nominee is chosen, they have to agree to attend the unveiling ceremony. Oy Vey, sounds like a lot of work.

The Walk of Fame is by far one of the most-visited spots in Hollywood. You can see everyone from Joanne Woodward, who was the very first recipient to receive a star, to John Wayne, Elton John, Renée Zellweger, and so on. New 2006 recipients include Charlize Theron, Ray Romano, Judge Judy, and Mathew Broderick.

The area around the walk of fame used to be a hotbed of drug addicts and homeless people, but the city has cleaned it up and maintained it to be a nice tourist spot. Just keep a hold of your belongings and don’t talk to strangers.

There’s Mann’s Chinese Theater, The Hollywood Wax Museum, and Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum also lining the sides of Hollywood Boulevard. The Kodak Theater, where the Academy Awards is held, is also a main attraction.

I advise to only go during daylight hours and try to park down the street for free. The parking lots around Mann’s Chinese Theater will pre-charge you for the entire day, even if you’re only there for an hour. Don't get taken.
