Go to the Bacardi Factory in Puerto Rico, and you have a solid factory tour coupled with a rum tasting at the end. But don't go to the Heineken Factory in Amsterdam expecting anything like that. It is, to put it simply, a disappointment. Virtual rides take you on the streets of Amsterdam on the Heineken horses. A walk through the brewing room is a walk through the old brewing room--no beer is currently made or processed there. The first three rooms on the tour represent the ingredients of beer; one of the room discusses the role of water in making beer. The only beer I saw was the one I was poured in the Heineken bars, which could've been poured at a bar with more ambience and history for the 10 euros I spent on admission.

Heineken Experience

If you like good beer, the Heineken Experience is for you! This was a working brewery until 1988, but now it's a museum and beer hall. Learn a little a history about Amsterdam and the brewery's namesake. See inside actual mash coppers and an explanation of the brewing process. The best part is getting to sample the fresh beer at two bars on the tour.

The tour is self-guided, so you take as much time as you want. You learn about how, at 22 years old, Gerard Adriaan Heineken borrowed money from his mother to build a new brewery on Stadhouderskade, and how Heineken became one of the most popular beers and one of the most respected names in the world. There's a virtual ride that takes you down the path of a Heineken bottle, from empty to full to nightclub. There's another that takes you through the streets of Amsterdam on a clydesdale-driven carriage.

There's an Internet cafe that lets you take a picture of yourself and email it to someone and a small giftshop at the end of the tour. Also, everyone who goes through the museum gets a free gift on the way out.

It was a nice way to spend an afternoon. It's very easy to get to from anywhere in the city. Take trams 24 or 16 and get off at Stadhouderskade.

It is fun. It’s not exactly a museum. It’s more like a mini theme park. There are many hands-on activities and mini rides. The best part is the mini bars set up throughout the exhibit where you get a free Heineken.

The first time I visited the Heineken Experience, I was very impressed with both the amount of information presented to visitors and the many hands-on types of exhibits. Since then, I've visited twice more, eager to show my visitors from home what a fun experience the Heineken Experience can be. Admission is 10€, which includes three half-pint glasses of Heineken (one midway through the exhibits and two more at the end, which is perfect), as well as a souvenir tin and glass at the very end. Exhibits range from explanations of the brewing process to the history of Heineken to past advertisements. I particularly like the futuristic reclining chairs with personal screens that show Heineken commercials from previous decades (although I imagine the line for this can be quite long in the summer). Another highlight is the two "rides"-- one in which visitors stand on a moving platform as they witness the bottling process through the "eyes" of a bottle, and another that involves a simulation of a Heineken delivery wagon driving through the streets of Amsterdam. By the end of the experience, the final two glasses of Heineken at the farewell bar are heartily welcomed. A tip--if you're keen to continue sipping, keep your eyes open for visitors with drink vouchers they won't use. Also, be sure to check out the gift shop either before or after your final beers, depending on how much you want to spend! I definitely recommend this attraction to visitors of all ages, whether you're a beer expert or just in the mood for an interesting and enjoyable morning or afternoon in Amsterdam.

Visit www.heinekenexperience.com for more details, including opening times (closed on Mondays, like many other museums).

Best thing ever! I went on this tour almost every day! Not only do you get some 'free' drinks and a glass in a tin can, but if you are nice, you usually get more! I have met some of the nicest people while on this tour, and we ended up spending the whole weekend together.

The best parts are the rides that go with the history. There is a horse-and-carriage simulator and a bottle-filling simulator. You can also sit in uber-comfortable chairs and watch commercials from the past, which is funner than it sounds!
