Healesville Sanctuary

Healesville Sanctuary was just part of the tour I'd booked with Gray Line. (They've got a lot of different tours that include a trip to Healesville Sanctuary.) It was my favorite part, however.

At Healesville, they ONLY present native Australian wildlife, so it's not quite like a zoo where they have other animals as well. There are free flight aviaries where you will get closer to rare birds (like the male lyrebird I saw) than you will most places, but they still really aren't on "display". You have to look to see them.

This is one of the things that friends who live in Melbourne suggested I go to see and I'd have to say they were right. It was a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

This is a great animal park outside of Melbourne where we saw the duck-billed platypus, hundreds of species of birds, reptiles, and of course kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and tazmanian devils. The ride out and back to Melbourne is a fun ride through the hills. There are also some wineries nearby.

It's not exactly a zoo, but a strictly Australian wildlife park about an hour outside of Melbourne. You can hang out with kangaroos- literally, they allow you to join them in their area- and also interact with koalas, wombats, and birds of prey. Other animals to see are tasmanian devils, dingoes, emus, and a fine selection of the more dangerous Australian reptiles. I also went to the Melbourne Zoo, which is great, but I enjoyed this more because it is more specialized and out of the way. You can get there by taking the Lilydale train all the way to the end, and then I believe there is a bus to Healesville.
