Description: We start our tour at the train station. For many visitors it will be the first place where they can see magnificent Mont-Blanc massif. At the station square you will find local bus station and a taxi stop. The bus schedule is usually tied to the train arrival/departure. Cross the station and walk up along the Rue de la Gare. Popular supermarket Casino is on the right side; prices here are much lower than in Megève or Chamonix. One block later you arrive to the Place Charles-Albert – main town square.
The picturesque square offers spectacular 360º view of surroundings. The orientation desk will point to the items of interest around you. The impressive monument in the center of the square dedicated to the French Revolution. The square lined with 19th century buildings is full of flowers. On the square you can find several cafes, restaurants and shops. We bought delicious goat cheese here, yummy, still remember its taste. Place Charles Albert is a great place for the morning coffee with Mont-Blanc view.
Friendly tourist office is nearby. Cross the river called Torrent La Sallanches and you will find the Tourist Information office in the town hall premises at 32 quai de l’Hotel de Ville. Personal is eager to help the travelers.
Continue walking along the river following the quay Saint Jacques. It brings you to the picturesque Saint-Jacques church at Place Saint-Jacques. Present church was started in 1389, some enhancements made in 1680–1688.
The Château des Rubins which houses the Mountain Nature center is five minutes walk uphill along Montee des Rubins.
On your way back retrace your steps to Place Saint-Jacques, follow down quay St. Jacques and cross the river when you see the sign pointing ‘Megève’. Here you can see another historic monument - the local market called Le Marché de Sallanches. The picturesque place was originally built in the 14th century and remains important part of the local life. Walk down quay Curral will bring you back to Place Charles-Albert. You can recharge you battery at one of the restaurants or do some last minute shopping in a boutique at Rue de la Gare before you return to the train station square 5 blocks down the street.
