Description: What a real treat here. This stunning waterfall is set in a scrumptious park setting allowing guests easy access to the falls and plenty to catch your eye on the way. It makes a great day out for the whole family.
Since 1931, the Tryon Garden Club has meticulously maintained this gem. They do a wonderful job. When you arrive at the entrance you pay a small fee (which goes to maintaining the park) and they will give you a trail guide. The park sets on 268 acres. There is a large parking area for visitors. From here there is a ¼ of a mile trail. It is very well defined and a fairly easy hike.
You take the Pearson Family trail to the falls. There is a natural barrier along the trail to keep you safe but allows you to ogle all the natural beauty. The Colt River where the falls comes from runs through the trail. There are a series of smaller falls along the way with each one getting prettier and prettier. There are over 200 species of plants along the way to enjoy. There are even some rare species found within the park including the sweet white trillium. You will find benches so you can sit a while and enjoy nature. Picturesque bridges cross over the river. There are big rocks to climb up on pose for pictures. It is just truly a delight so take your time. You will round the corner and hear the falls. Keep going and you are stopped dead in your tracks.
The 90 foot thundering falls are something to behold. The falls are named for Charles William Pearson who discovered the while out looking for a route from Spartanburg SC to Asheville NC for the Southern Railroad just after the Civil War. There is a fence to keep visitors from getting right up to the falls. But you get very close to this beauty.
The glen is a NC Natural History Site. They do have a covered picnic area and restrooms (but they are porta a potties so bring handiwipes). You can purchase a book on the falls called
Pearson’s Falls and the Glen by Donald Peattie. This would be a beautiful place for wedding or prom pictures. But please contact the club in regards to commercial photography. You can also have a wedding here and hold other events here. Just contact the club for more information.
