Historic Building converted to Art Center

The Isaacs Art Center was formerly a classroom building for the local schools since it was built in 1915. It was moved to its current site in June 2002 and restored to its former glory over the next 20 months. The 5,580 square-foot art center is located next to the Hawaii Preparatory Academy School Campus. With community support, this beautiful building was placed on the State Register of Historic Places in March 2003. It was recently recognized with a Preservation Honor Award from the Historic Hawaii Foundation. The Isaacs Art Center displays and sells works by leading Hawaii artists of the twentieth and late nineteenth centures. It also displays Asian furniture, wood sculptures, and other collectibles. Some of the works displayed here are oils from Jean Charlot and Madge Tennent. Also on display are paintings and collections from Martha Greenwell, Louis Pohl, Shirley Russel, and Lionel Walden, and Ben Norris. Herb Kawainui Kane's (one of the most popular Hawaiian artists that paints historical Hawaiian events) The Arrival of Captain Cook at Kealakekua Bay in January 1779 is also on display here at the Art Center. The center is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday - Saturday and admission is free. I would recommend visiting the Isaacs Art Center not only for the artwork but also for the historical significance of the building. Note that the building was also converted into a field hospital during World War II.
