One of the Oldest Buildings in Downtown Hilo

This brightly colored yellow wooden church is located on Haili Street across the McDonald's restaurant. It is one of the oldest building structures in downtown Hilo. The fifth and present structure, started in 1854, was completed and dedicated on April 8, 1859. On July 15, 1979, fire destroyed the tower, ceiling and some of the interior of this building. The restored church was rededicated on June 1, 1980. The original building was constructed with ohia and koa wood from an area southwest of Hilo called Haili, meaning "loving memory," hence the name of the church. This was the first all-wood building constructed in Hilo (the wooden Lyman House missionary home was erected in Hilo in 1836 after being prefabricated in New England). Today Haili church opens its doors to the public and has the following service times: 9:45 AM Adult Bible Class, 11:00 AM Worship Service
and Children's Sunday School.
