The North Branch Bicycle Trail starts at Caldwell and Devon Avenues in Chicago and goes north for some 20 miles ending up at the border of Lake County. It is part of 13 bike trails belonging to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Parking and bike rental is available at Devon and Milwaukee Avenues (in Chicago). There is a trail here that links to main trail. Super Dawg hot stand is nearby. It has outdoor seating and is patronized by bike riders. The trail follows the Chicago River and then the Skokie Lagoon all the way to the Chicago Botanical Garden and the Lake County border. The Botanical Garden is free to bike riders (admission is charged by car parking). All along the trail are picnic tables and well water pumps. Occasionally you will see deer and other forms of wildlife.
