Jungceylong Center

Although I can't and won't compare Junceylon with the "great" ones in Florida and Minnesota, Phuket's shopping center has something to brag about.

A wide variety of clothes and souvenir shops sprawl two levels. Merchants include Old Navy, the Gap and local names. Department stores carry electronics, household items and groceries. Should you run out of cash, there are two banks extended offering extended hours including Saturdays and Sundays.

The basement level has work from local artists. There are hand carved wooden bowls from Chiang Mai, traditional Thai garmets, oils, incense and more. I purchased all of the afore mentioned before stopping to enjoy one of the traditional dance performance followed by a sword sparing demonstration.

Back to the main level, entertainment outside by the fountains consisted of modern singing and dancing. Although during special events, being the largest stage, shows were of Polynesian Nights including Tahitian dancing and fire dancers.

Between the two levels, some type of entertainment can be seen nearly hourly. At the very least, the dancing waterfall display with the story of the princess projected into the mist is 20 minutes long and is shown hourly.

Dining on the basement level was an experience I repeated several times during my stay. At Food Haven you purchased a card putting any amount you wish on it. You could cash out any balance at the end of your stay or add to it as needed. Inside, there were about 10 different mini restaurants where you purchased items using the card. All the placed served Asian food, from Mandarin and Canton Chinese to North and South Thai food to Mongolian. There were noodle dishes, Asian omelets, won ton soup, stir fry and more. A smoothie bar with passion fruit, litchi and other local favorites served up your choice. Even a small salad bar provided accompaniments to your meal. Prices were very reasonable so you could afford to try several items.

Restaurants on the main level included a food court of fast food favorites like Subway and Kentucky Fried. Down another walkway, upscale Italian and Asian restaurants were interspersed with salons and massage shops.

A personal favorite of mine called the Pizza Restaurant offer $4 all you can eat soup and salad bar which had items like tuna salad, shrimp salads, fruits salads, two types of soups and the basics. For $5 you could get a burger and fries along with the salad bar.
