While kinetic skulpure racing has its roots in Ferndale, California, this annual race began in 1983 in Port Townsend, which makes it the second oldest in the circuit. This Victorian seaport town nestled between forests, the Olympic Mountains, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, saves an entire October weekend for races, parades, festivals, and more. A kinetic skulpture is "a human-powered, artistically-enhanced vehicle that must go through mud, float on water, and transverse hilly neighborhoods." In other words, you "take a generous portion of adventure, mix in some garage engineering and creative artistic license, then stir vigorously amongst enthusiastic fans, and you have a recipe for kinetic sculpture racing."
