Fox Glacier

This is a glacier that has receeded huge amount in recent years. You can see how much it has receeded because there are signs beside the access road indicating the times the glacier was at a particular place. It is possible to walk within 50m of the glacier without a guide for free. If you want to get closer, guided tours are available from Fox Glacier Village, and it is possible to walk on the glacier with these guides. Equipment is provided. The sheer volume of ice is spectacular, and the valley shows the scars of where the glacier has been. Helicopter flights are also available over the glacier.
