This museum is located near the Helsinki Cathedral, so you won't have troubles finding it. When you enter the building, don't bother knocking on the doors (I was told nobody will open) on the first floor but go straight to the second floor. There is a place where you can leave your jackets but it's unguarded so take your valuables with you. 6-year-old and younger children go for free but I would recommend you not to take very young kids with you, as some of the items can be fragile and you aren't allowed to touch them unless there's a sign telling that you can touch them (a couple of items had that sign).

I visited this museum with my study group and had a very knowledgeable professor, who told us everything about the items while we were watching them. The museum offers guided tours as well but I haven't tried them.

There's so much to see in this museum that it's impossible to describe it in one sentence but I'll try to name a few: old photos, doctor's theses, documents, books, rocks, clothes, doctor's equipment, laboratory equipment, mammoth's teeth...basically everything related to academic life.
