El Pony Pisador Bar

Last weekend, my friends and I decided it was high time we went dancing. Needless to say, it was just the girls, because when we revel we do so without men.

So the girls, we, chose "El Pony" for our maiden night.

As El Pony is not only a restaurant but it is also a disco, we planned to have dinner, have some drinks, and then head to the dance floor. We arrived at 10:30pm, which is really early for Uruguayan nightlife standards, and it was completely crowded. We attempted to look for a table and when we asked the waiter he made an effort not to laugh at us, instead he smiled and kindly said "I’m afraid you'd better make yourself comfortable at the bar unless you would like to freeze on our balconies." We obviously chose the first option since the latter was not a viable one. For those who don’t know, July is the coldest month in Uruguay with temperature ranging from -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F).

Without further consideration, we almost jumped to the only little place that was in the bar, which was big enough for one of us to ask for food to fill our starving stomachs.

Up to this point, I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to sit down, have a nice dinner, chat with my friends, enjoy a few drinks, and then if I felt like dancing I would go to the dance floors. However, everything went the other way round, but not bad enough as to ruin the night.

Continuing with the story, we first asked for drinks to warm up the night, and then tried to think of something we would eat without being sitting. We agreed on french fries with champignon sauce, a local favorite! When the fries arrived, they were raw so we had to ask the bartender to bring us new fries, which implied that we had to continue waiting.

By the time the fries arrived we were already on our second, maybe third, drink so we thought they were delicious (it’s up to you to trust our judgment). Needless to say, we were still starving when we finished the fries so we ordered a pizza, which I would not recommend to anybody.

The night went on and, without even noticing it, we were already on the dance floor. El Pony has three different dance floors with different music. On one of them, there’s live music, in general cover bands. The one on the second floor plays salsa, and on the third dance floor, oldies are played. We spent the night visiting the three of them, we enjoyed it very much.

To sum up, we spent a fantastic night, we enjoyed it a lot, and we really had fun; although we would not recommend the place for dinner, just for the drinks and the ambiance. Otherwise, if you still want to give the food a chance, I advise you to make reservations a week in advance. Yes, you’ve read it right: a week in advance! That’s something I would never do, I would dine somewhere else and then would go to enjoy some drinks and to dance.

El Pony -- Second Chance

El Pony -- Second Chance

Last week it was my birthday…unfortunately I had forgotten about El Pony’s food quality and I decided to celebrate it there.

First I tried to make reservations so my friends and I could have a good seat to enjoy dinner and then have fun in the dancing floor. When I called the pub a kind woman told me about the reservation requirements. I had to tell her the exact amount of people coming, my guests should spend a minimum of $15 each and I should send her the 50% of my guests’ expenses in advance. I immediately did the maths and said: "there’s no way I could do that." First I didn’t know exactly how many people were coming; it was between 15 and 20. It was an average of $200 just to book for the room. It was not worth the effort.
So I asked her if I could go early and just pick one table, she said it would be totally fine.

I arrived at El Pony at 9pm (really, really early for Uruguay standards) to find that all the tables had been booked in advance!

Unfortunately I couldn’t go anywhere else because I had already told my friends I would be there. So I just picked a place in the bar and asked for a whisky!

At that point I couldn’t believe that all the tables had been booked in advance, it must be the only place in Uruguay where you have to pay a fee in advance to book for your table. It’s unbelievable. However, I was not angry at all, after all, it had been my fault because I hadn’t wanted to send them the money! It’s not that I thought it was expensive, but it was odd.

After an hour…the metre realized that a lot of people were coming for my birthday so she gave in and gave us a table in the vip part of the pub. Although it was a small table we managed pretty well. Again, we couldn’t sit down and explore the menu, we just stuck to the pizzas which you could have while standing around. And once again the pizzas were not to my liking, they were those pizzas taken from the fridge with thin and raw crust but after the third whisky anything would fit.

Even though El Pony doesn’t fulfill all my expectations I still choose it because of its great location and atmosphere. But next year I’ll try to read my reviews first so I remember to choose somewhere else.
