"If you build it, they will come"

Is this Heaven? No it’s Iowa. This is the famous line from the movie Field of Dreams. Filmed in 1989, the movie features Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster in his last movie appearance. For those who have never seen the movie, it is about a farmer who hears voices that he should build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. After building the field against the wishes of everyone around him, the eight players of the 1919 White Sox who were banned from baseball crossed over from the cornfield in the outfield to play baseball on his field. The movie went on to be nominated for Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score, Best Writing, and Best Picture.

The movie was filmed almost entirely in Dubuque County, Iowa. The movie site which contains the house and the field is in the town of Dyersville. The field has been preserved as a tourist site by the Lansing family who agreed to allow their land to be used for the setting of the movie. Admission to the site is free making it an ideal tourist destination for families and baseball fans who wants to experience the movie.

The field is regularly maintained and it is open for anyone who wants to come and run the bases or just hit a few into the outfield. They do not rent out equipment, but they encourage everyone to bring their bats, balls, and gloves and take to the field. The bleachers are still there for those who would rather watch and possibly do their own dreaming. You can also become a Black Sox player by walking into the cornfield and out onto the field, making it one of the best picture opportunities. The Lansing family who has owned the farm for the last ninety years do everything they can to preserve the field and its surroundings just as it was depicted in the movie. The house itself is closed to the public since it is still a private residence, but they encourage you to take all the pictures you want. Stop by the souvenir shop and take a memento back home of your visit and then you truly have "Gone the Distance."

Dyersville is 25 miles from Dubuque, Iowa and 200 miles from Chicago, Illinois. The Field of Dreams Movie Site is located on Lansing Road. Highway 136 goes through Dyersville and at the intersection of 136 and Dyersville East Road, there is a sign saying "Field of Dreams Movie Site." After three miles on Dyersville East Road, you will turn right onto Lansing Road and a mile down the road you will see the site. The site is open from April through November 9am to 6pm.
