Huka Falls

The Huka Falls are one of the more magnificent waterfalls you might find, as well as one of the more unusual. When most people think of waterfalls, the typical image conjured to mind is of a sheer rock face, careening hundreds of feet overhead and a roaring jet of water pounding into the base of the cliff.

That's not at all what you'll find at Huka Falls. Rather, what happens here is the Waikato River squeezes from a width of about 350 yards to just around 50 feet. It stays in this tight stretch for 250 yards, gaining speed and pressure all the while (as the mass of water piles in from behind, pushing forwards) until it launches over a 35 foot high cliff into the river below.

It's simply majestic. The sheer power of all that rushing water - words just fail.

While you're there, you can walk on a bridge over the causeway, stand by some fences to see the falls up close, but the best place to see the falls is from a ways up the highway (you'll see a sign telling you to pull off for the view) - that where we took the picture that's with this review. From that vantage point, you truly appreciate how strong the falls are (as the foam shoots out for 30 or 40 feet).

Going to the falls is absolutely free. You can, however, take a jet boat to the edge of the falls (not sure about the cost).
