Lunenburg is a small fishing town 57 mile southeast of Halifax. Upon visiting, you will find a full day of activities all within walking distance of the main dock.

Old Town Lunenburg, founded in 1753, is an outstanding example of British colonial settlement in North America, in terms both of its conception as a model Town plan and its remarkable level of conservation. The Town's cultural evolution based on shipbuilding and the fishing industry can be seen in the buildings and spaces that exist throughout the Town. During my one-day visit in mid-July I saw buildings of various colors and architecture, went on a whale-watch tour, visited the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and ate dinner at the Knot Pub. You can also walk around the harbor and visit caves along the shore.

On the whale-watch tour we did see a few minke whales, 25 to 30 feet, seals, and a puffin. The boat ride included a brief harbor tour and wonderful scenery. The whales were near the harbor, so a long ride into the ocean was not necessary. While this was a nice experience, if you are looking to see many animals, I have been on other whale-watches tours in other places that were much better. Along the docks were other cruises and tours available for varying lengths of time, such as a one-hour harbor cruise.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is a wonderful place to visit, commemorating the fishing heritage of the Atlantic coast of Canada. You could easily spend two hours and not see it all. The museum includes fresh and saltwater aquariums, boat building displays, whaling, displays of life in the 1800s, and of course a great deal of information on the area’s fishing and history. The museum includes two vessels at its wharf side that will give you the feeling of what it was like to live and work aboard a ship.

There seemed to always be staff nearby that were willing to answer questions and help describe what you were looking at.

I am certain there is plenty here to interest both children and adults.
