The Old Christ Church (1832)

The Old Christ Church (1832)

Our fourth stop on my visit to Historic Pensacola Village was to the Old Christ Church (1832). Built in 1832, this Episcopalian Church is one of the oldest churches in the state of Florida.

In its 175-year history, Old Christ Church has a long and colorful history. During the Civil War, the Confederacy occupied Pensacola from 1861-1862, and they turned Old Christ Church into a hospital for its wounded soldiers. After the Confederate Army fled Pensacola in 1862, the Union Army occupied Pensacola, and Old Christ Church was still used as a hospital for Union wounded. The Union Army destroyed some of the interior of the church and being used as a hospital damaged the church even more.

Reconstruction of Old Christ Church didn't happen until 1879, and it once again became a church for the people of Pensacola, but it was short-lived. In the following years and into the 20th Century, Old Christ Church was a library, and old-timers of Pensacola can remember checking out books here when they were younger.

The altar of Old Christ Church is very interesting, I learned. A large stained glass window and two smaller ones besides it are the only ornate signs in this church, but they are bright and colorful windows. In the early 19th Century, three young Episcopalian Priests preached here, and died in their early 30's, but their final wish was to be buried at the Old Christ Church Altar. Today, these three priests are buried underneath the altar with a plaque commemorating their births and deaths and contributions to the community.

In the late 20th Century, Old Christ Church went under some serious renovations and was restored to its church glory, but the church today is only used for special occasions but can be rented out for weddings. It's a small church with simple and beautiful architecture. Its one large stained glass window and two smaller stained glass windows above the altar and clear windows along the church give the church a bright and airy feeling.

Old Christ Church is open from 10-4 daily.
