Prairie Berry Winery

The Prairie Berry Winery, near Hill City, offers wine tasting all year around -- and you'd be silly to miss your chance. This winery focuses and uses fruits native to South Dakota, and they do a fine job of it. Their wines consistently win national and international awards.

My friends and I went for a tasting just last week. You get to taste five wines for free; you can taste five more for $5. When you're with friends, it's a good idea to all taste something different, and you can share.

We were given a sheet listing all the available wines. I went straight for the sweeter wines -- my favorites are the three-starred ones. (One star being the driest wines; five stars the sweetest.) I also tried a semi-dry white wine, Cascade Falls, to mix it up a bit.

At the end, my favorites were Chokecherry Medley and Black Currant -- deliciously sweet with a lovely aftertaste. Black Currant was also my server's favorite. "People ask me what to serve this with," she said, "and I tell them: 'everything'."

I also tried the Juneberry and Great Grandma's Chokecherry Bliss. The Chokecherry Bliss is a dessert wine, a bit like port, and comes in a smaller bottle for that reason. As a five-star wine, it was a bit much for me.

My friends loved the Cascade Falls and Deadwood wines, and they each bought a bottle of Deadwood, a semi-dry red wine, to take back to the Netherlands with them.

Other favorite wines of mine, which were not available at this tasting, are the Red-Ass Rhubarb and Three Red Necks wines. During the holiday season, they also make a pumpkin wine which tends to sell out very quickly -- because it's amazing. It was with that wine that I was first introduced to Prairie Berry wines, and I was hooked.

The winery also offers a light menu and a patio, if you'd like to buy a glass to drink outside after you've finished tasting and shopping. There are also other products available, from corkscrews to jams and jellies.

Prairie Berry wines are an excellent gift for anyone, but especially for visitors who are looking to take a bit of South Dakota home with them.
