House 3: The Dorr House (1871)

House 3: The Dorr House (1871)

After the Julee Cottage and Lavalle House, Scott and I made our way to our next destination, The Dorr House. Built in 1871 by Clara Barkley Dorr, this house is one of the prime examples of Greek Revival architecture in Western Florida.

The Dorr Family was an affluent family in Pensacola in the mid-19th Century. This house was built for the family as proof of their wealth, but tragedy struck in the Dorr family while the house was being built. In a short period of time, both Clara's husband and son died of yellow fever, and Clara lived in the house alone.

Entering the air-conditioned haven of Dorr House, Scott told me the story of the Dorr Family and how the wealthy Pensacolans showed their wealth through big houses and expensive and weird knick-knacks. Along with the milk lanterns, ornate furniture and fireplaces, one curio cabinet had a shrunken head from an island in the South Pacific. I joked to Scott that I don't think that would be my idea of decorating and mentioned that my dogs Loki and Katie tried to "decorate" our house in Donnelly with various deer parts on many occasions. Scott chuckled at that story.

The Dorr House has gone under major renovations in the past 20 years, and as of 2005, the Dorr House has been the home to the President of West Florida University. Tours are given when the President is at work, but Scott said a couple of times, the President came home for lunch or the day and there was a tour going on, but he would say hello and move on.

Dorr House and Historic Pensacola Village are open daily from 10-4. Dorr House's interior is only accessible with a tour ticket, and after the tour, I was able to walk around the yard of the house.
