From journal 2005 Trip to New Zealand
April 2, 2004
There is limited lodging available within the park (and the rooms are pricey and small). We suggest instead that you consider staying in the nearby town of Ohakune. We spent the night at the beautiful and well-appointed Cairnbrae House B&B near Ohakune and absolutely loved it! Our room's balcony had an unobstructed view of snow-covered Mt. Ruapehu and we have a great photo of the full moon rising behind the mountain. The homeowners are friendly and gracious and have many suggestions for hiking trails, etc. Prices start at NZ$160 (current exchange rate for NZ$ is about 65% of US$). You can even opt to join your hosts for a gourmet dinner with wine. They do have pets (which are not allowed upstairs) and a small deer enclosure adjoins the property. Email them at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the website.
