The beach at Elafonisi is suitably beautiful, if a little overcrowded, so I would recommend wading out to the isle (10m or so, 50cm deep although fast-moving water) and walking round the left-hand side of the island. The further you get, the sparser the tourists become, and the more picture-perfect the island gets. You'll soon have your own little beach all to yourselves. But take supplies - it's not a trek you'll want to make regularly. Secluded bliss!
The choice of wide-open sands of the main beaches and secluded bays makes this a perfect destination for families, although pack entertainment for the car ride.
