St. Augustine Beach (General)

St. Augustine Beach (General)

We visited the beach twice during our trip to St. Augustine. Since the city's tourist attractions are almost all closed by 6pm, there's little else to do otherwise.

It seemed that there were evening concerts near the pier on the weekends, which filled up that parking area, but at other times there was plenty of parking at multiple free lots along the beach. The beach wasn't too crowded, but it wasn't deserted either, which was nice and peaceful. As far as safety went, I never saw any lifeguards, so make sure to watch out for your kids.

We walked along the St. John's Pier (50¢ each) for a better view of the beach and ocean. The beach was a nice way to relax and end the day.

Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach is a lovely, long, mostly undiscovered stretch of beach just northeast of St. Augustine. Take A1A north across the Vilano Bridge (an experience in itself!). At the end of the bridge, turn right. You will find public access to the beach, which includes life guards on duty. If you'd rather find a spot a little less busy, head farther north up A1A, and you will come across more public access points. Some of them have picnic shelters. Most public access points have porta-potties and there are convience stores nearby. Bring beach towels and plenty of sunscreen.

Just under the Vilano Bridge is a spot where you can rent jetskis, arrange to go parasailing or deep-sea fishing.

If you decide to spend more time in Vilano, there are many wonderful restaurants and hotels. In fact, we always stay in Vilano and just make side trips into St. Augustine. Staying right on the beach is really a treat!

The beach here is really nice. The sand is not like most on the Atlantic; it is very white, soft, and powdery. When we were there, the water was very clean and the waves were not too big. There are lots of restaurants around the area, and neat places to shop.
