The Pancake Rocks

A park on the western coast of the North island, it is well worth stopping by to see the Pancake Rocks. And what are the Pancake Rocks, you may be asking? Well, the are "limestone formations from over 30 million years ago... [As] the seabed was raised above sea level to form the coastal cliffs and coastline, the sea, wind and rain have since etched out the soft layers to form the unusual rock formations..."

They are quite unique and well worth stopping to see. Also, if you are a fan of the Bird of Paradise flowers, there are some of the largest we have ever seen at this site. The planets reached well beyond the heads of either of us. Interestingly enough, we were told that the Kiwis view the plant as just this side of a weed.

No charge to view the park; a donation is requested.

The Pancake Rocks and Blowholes are amazing! They are these huge rock formations along the ocean that look like millions of pancakes all piled up. And they're huge!!! The surf crashes up against them, into caves, and out the blowholes. It's like nothing I have ever seen before -- the most unique rock formations I think I have ever seen! A definite highlight (of the many) on the South Island!
