Cupcake

On the Thursday afternoon that I arrived in Charleston, I checked out a few historical houses, had lunch at one of Rachael Ray’s haunts, and checked out an amazing sunset at Battery Park. I thought I would stop by Cupcake Bakery on my way back to the hotel. I called around 5:30 to see when they closed and was told normally at 7, but they were sold out for the day. Ditto for Friday and Saturday. Finally on Sunday, John stopped by the show and picked me up for a carriage ride and lunch before he headed home. Before we left, I insisted on going to Cupcake to see if I could finally get some cupcakes.

The cupcake fad began in NYC after one was mentioned in the hit HBO series Sex & the City. So when NYC denizen, Kristin Kuhlke, moved to Charleston she knew it would be the perfect place to open up shop. Judging by how long it took me to get a cupcake and how many people were here when I arrived, I do believe she has been quite successful. They are Charleston’s only cupcake bakery.

Cupcake is located in the up and coming area of Charleston, King St., in the same building as Planet Smoothie. This once dilapidated part of town is now being revamped with chic shops, restaurants, and bars. The shop is located only minutes from the visitor’s center on Meeting St.

The bakery boasts more than two dozen varieties of cupcakes from your standard chocolate and vanilla, angel food, red velvet, chocolate chip, to the more unique such as piña colada, banana and butterscotch, and black bottom. They offer nine flavors every day. We picked up chocolate, red velvet, pumpkin, and cookies and cream when we were in town. And I tell you, they were so yummy.

Cupcakes are $2.75 each or a dozen for $30. Mini cupcakes are $15.00 for a dozen. Placing your order ahead and picking them up seems to be quite a popular alternative judging by the boxes of these heavenly delights waiting to be picked up.

They are open from 10am until 7pm everyday. That is, if the cupcakes actually stay around that long. If you are planning on stopping by later on during the day, I would suggest calling ahead (843-853-8181) to make sure they still have some cupcakes left. Otherwise, I would suggest getting there early to ensure you to can bring home some of Kristin’s creations.
