Ivindo National Park

Located in the northeastern part of the country, Ivindo was made famous by the articles in National Geographic magazine that chronicled the megatransect adventures of explorer/scientist Michael Bey. While the logging town of Ivindo, outside the park, is easily accessible from Libreville via train, the park itself is virtually untouched.

The only place to stay inside the park is the Langouie Bai camp. This is reached via a two-hour drive in a 4X4, followed by an arduous 8.2 kilometer hike... the first half hour of which is a steep ascent up a rough trail. From the camp to the Bai itself (a natural opening in the jungle) is another 4km hike.

From the scientific viewing platform at the Bai I was able to observe gorillas, sitatunga, forest elephants and buffalos, and many birds. It's a magical place. The opportunity exists to spend the night on the platform, in individual tents. The frog/insect chorus is wonderful and the Bai itself offers wonderful views of untouched forest.

Be aware that you have to carry all your own personal gear up to the camp... there is no porterage available, and it is one hot, sweaty climb. Recommended only for the physically fit.
