Description: During a recent stay in Negril we tried the Canopy Tour. Although this tour is really in the interior of the island, and took a 90 bus ride to get there it was worth every minute. Chukka is a full featured activity tour operator. This facility offered ATV rides, lazy river tubing, and the canopy tour.
The canopy tour is under a $100 per person and I was ready to do it twice. You arrive to brightly colored huts and friendly faces, it is Jamaica after all. You get a quick briefing on the process of getting equipped and spray mosquito repellent all over. Next you are off.
We broke into smaller manageable groups and had a safety briefing among giant bamboo. Our group had about 8 guests and 3 staff. They bantered and joked back and forth making sure to include everyone. It seemed like we were old friends.
The first zip run was to get your bearings. Jumping off a platform isn't natural. But everyone did it. The youngest of our initial group looking fearless, making sure the rest of us had to at least try to emulate the little stinker.
I was the last guest to go and could see everyone waiting on the receiving platform. I was going to show them how athletic and brave I could be! Of course my cool factor was soon abandoned as I got my glove too close to the wheels that suspended me over the tree tops and jammed the mechanism stopping me well short of the destination. When this happens you have to pull yourself hand over hand until you reach the platform.
Oh, well, now with no worry of being able to be as cool and fearless as the child who scampered across like a monkey I could settle down and enjoy the views and the freedom gliding across tropical treetops and rivers can provide.
I plan to make this tour a requirement for each trip to Negril or Montego Bay.
