Busabout Tours

My uncle brought us early in the morning to the Hostal Metropole in central Madrid where our Busabout coach was going to pick us up for our three-day bus tour of Spain.

Busabout is a tour I read about online. It's packaged as a cheaper alternative to doing a Eurail-based backpacking trip: somewhat of a cross between a completely independent backpacking trip and a packaged Contiki-like experience. According to the reviews, most of the participants happen to be Australian (I later found out that this is because Busabout markets heavily in Australia), but the head office of the company is based in London, and the registration is actually in Bermuda.

The way Busabout works is like a long-distance hop-on-hop-off bus. Coaches follow regular routes through Europe and North Africa. Participants can hop on at any of the coach stops, hop off for a few days to discover the city, and then hop back on again the next time a Busabout coach passes through (which is about every two days).

Apart from the regular country-to-country coach routes, there are also shorter routes called "Explorer" routes which are more similar to the usual packaged tours of a particular country. The Explorer routes are three-day-two-night tours that nonetheless allow participants a few hours a day to explore each site on their own.

Busabout participants can either buy a short Explorer package, a regional pass that allows them to use any Busabout buses in a particular region (for example, Western Europe), or a full flexible pass that allows them to use any Busabout buses all over Europe and North Africa for a certain period of time.

We got the Spanish Explorer ticket which, for just 99 pounds (plus accommodation), would allow us to visit, within three days, Toledo, Granada, Seville, and Cordoba. I was really interested in Granada (and Moorish Spain in general), and was excited about the chance to visit it.

To learn about Busabout check out the website. The telephone number at their head office in London is +44 (207) 950 1661. Email address is info@busabout.com.
